Los Angeles

Day 9: Wednesday 25th April

Met the guys from exo relaxing by the pool as we were going for breakfast at Swingers again. It was our intention to not do very much at all today, just chill out and relax. There were a few things we had to do though, including another trip to Kinkos to check and send e-mails, and a return to the record shop on Melrose. That done, we decided to try the pool out. It was nowhere near as hot as it had been the day before but it was still quite warm, t-shirt and shorts weather. The pool was absolutely freezing, so neither of us stayed in there for very long. We did have an interesting chat with a guy who lived in San Francisco, which was our next destination, so we picked up a few ideas of what to do from him.

Breakfast at Swingers

We hadn't actually booked anywhere to stay in S.F. so we had a quick call round some hotels that were recommended in our guide books, and booked two nights at the Aida hotel. Our plan for the evening was to go and see some bands, after all, you can't go to Los Angeles and not see some bands. One of the assistants in a clothes shop on Melrose had suggested the Dragonfly club on Santa Monica Blvd. as a good venue to see some rock and roll bands so that was our chosen destination. We took the car and headed out to find the club. It didn't open until 9 o'clock, but we thought we could park up there and have some food first. Unfortunately the club was in a very seedy part of town so, rather than leave the car in such a rough looking area for longer than necessary, we drove back to Melrose where we knew there were a lot of places to eat. After parking up we had a little stroll until we saw Chianti, a nice little Italian restaurant with reasonably priced food. Even before we had made it through the door the waitresses were talking to us, asking us all about our tattoos, and they were all absolutely thrilled to learn we were newly weds on honeymoon. We were sat down next to a table of police officers which was a bit disconcerting because they were all armed, something we are not used to in England. They seemed to be regulars judging by the way they were joking with the manager.

The food was absolutely delicious, but because we had eaten some cakes earlier at the Farmers Market, it was a struggle to finish it. Then, to our surprise, our waitress came over and announced that, because we were on honeymoon, the staff and management would like to give us some dessert on the house. This was such a lovely gesture, but we were so full we just couldn't eat anything else. No problem they said, we could take something away with us instead, so we paid our bill and walked out with a huge portion of cheesecake that we took back to the hotel and put it in the fridge for tomorrows breakfast, and then set off for the Dragonfly to listen to some ROCK MUSIC!

My worries about parking the car were unfounded because the club provided valet parking (imagine that in London) so I paid the valet and we went into the club. It was a pretty small venue and suitably sleazy inside. There were five bands playing, headlined by Jet 68. The first band were called Jane Fontana, and musically they were quite interesting, but the singer was nowhere near as good as she thought she was. Next up were the Puppies who were really good, just the type of L.A. rock we were looking for. Jet 68 were even better, a very professional sounding rock band. By the time they had finished it was well gone midnight and we decided to head home rather than stay and watch the last two bands because we had to check out by noon the next day and we had to pack everything we had bought over the last few days.
